What to Do Now if Title Grant Funding Falls Short

School budgeting is always an exercise in hope and caution.

But this year, with shifts in federal funding and Title grants in question, some school leaders are finding themselves asking: “What do we do if the money doesn’t come?”

3 Budget Moves for Uncertain Times

A Quick Guide for Charter School Leaders Facing Federal Funding Uncertainty

In times of budget ambiguity—especially around Title funding—it helps to have a plan, even if you never need it. Use this simple checklist with your leadership team to create clarity and reduce stress.

✅ 1. Identify Flex Expenses

Ask: Which expenses could we pause or reduce if needed?

  • Technology upgrades

  • PD travel or stipends

  • Non-essential contracted services

  • Summer programming additions

  • Supplemental materials

💡 Tip: Flag items in your budget spreadsheet that are “non-core” to instruction or compliance.

✅ 2. Map Federal Funding Ties

Ask: Which roles, stipends, or services are directly tied to federal dollars (Title I, II, III, IV?)

  • Interventionist or instructional coach positions

  • Expanded-day staff or tutoring support

  • Family engagement programs

  • Software/licenses funded by ESSER or Title IV

💡 Tip: Label these clearly in your staffing plan or HR chart for quick visibility.

✅ 3. Calculate Your Cash Runway

Ask: If revenue is delayed, how long can we operate on current cash reserves?

  • Calculate your monthly fixed costs

  • Multiply by 2–3 months (60–90 days)

  • Compare to actual cash-on-hand

💡 Tip: Work with your back-office or finance team to keep this figure up-to-date monthly.
